Sanctuary for Disadvantaged Men in Derby

Indigenous Affairs Minister Michelle Roberts officially opened the new Derby Men’s Centre in Ashley Street last week

“The centre is a place for men dealing with alcohol and drug issues from Derby and surrounding communities such as Looma, Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creek,” Mrs Roberts said.

“The visitors have the opportunity to socialise and participate in alcohol and drug education classes in a supportive and encouraging environment.”

The centre was established in 2001 by Neil Buckle, a director of the Wamba Nilgee Burru Ngardu Aboriginal Corporation, which was established in November last year to run the centre.

Until recently, the Derby Men’s Centre operated out of the Shire Building on Elders Street, but a more suitable space became available on Ashley Street.

“Up to 40 men visit the centre every day to use the showering and washing facilities, cook meals for themselves in the communal kitchen, watch television and play pool,” the Minister said.

Mrs Roberts said the centre also ran art classes and organised fishing trips.

“These activities are doing more than just giving the men something to occupy their time - they are regaining valuable social and life skills,” she said.

New Football Academy for the Kimberley

Premier Alan Carpenter announced this week that a $2million expansion of a successful football academy to tackle school attendance and participation for indigenous boys.

Mr Carpenter said the money would be spent on extending the East Kimberley Clontarf Football Academy over the next five years, with new programs at Halls Creek District High School and an expansion of the existing academy at Kununurra.

“These programs have been very successful in providing positive experiences for indigenous students in their communities, both in promoting self-esteem and sporting prowess,” the Premier said.

“Two new programs will be established at Halls Creek District High School for indigenous boys in Years Five to Seven, and Years Eight to 12,” he said.

“Meanwhile, the existing academy based at Kununurra, which targets students in Years Eight to 12, will be expanded to include a primary program for Years Five to Seven.”

The $2million is in addition to the $6.2million the State Government has spent on the Clontarf Foundation’s football academies across WA over the past four years.

Mr Carpenter said the Clontarf Football Academy was remarkable because it used Australian Rules Football as a vehicle to engage and involve indigenous boys at school.
