About NAIDOC

NAIDOC is an annual event that recognises and celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

In 1957 the National Aborigines Day of Observance Committee (NADOC) was created, and the second Sunday of July became a day of remembrance for Aboriginal people and their heritage.

In 1975 the event was extended to a week-long event, and the committee was responsible for organising activities during NAIDOC Week, as the committee’s acronym became the name of the week itself. In 1991, NADOC became known as the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC), to be inclusive of Torres Strait Islanders.

About NAIDOC Perth

NAIDOC Perth is a community-based initiative staffed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander volunteers.

The group started in September 2006 when ATSIC, which had run events, was disbanded.

In 2008, NAIDOC Perth has identified the following aims;

  • To manage the NAIDOC Perth Opening Ceremony on Sunday 6 July 2008 at Wellington Square;
  • To manage the NAIDOC Perth Ball on Friday 11 July 2008 at the Hyatt Regency;
  • To manage the NAIDOC Perth Awards, which will be presented at the Opening Ceremony; and
  • To promote NAIDOC events in Perth through a program of events, website and media campaign.

By working toward these goals, the Perth NAIDOC team has developed an exciting program of events for NAIDOC Week 2008, promoting the theme Advance Australia Fair?

NAIDOC theme for 2008

The national theme for 2008 is Advance Australia Fair?

The theme presents a challenge to the government and people of Australia to deliver real change in the lives of Indigneous Australians.

All Australians are enouraged to reflect upon the Australian principle of a fair go and consider the inequalities and disadvantage still experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
