Land and Sea Management

The Land Branch and the ALT are committed to assisting and empowering communities to manage land sustainably. The Land Branch works to develop partnerships between Aboriginal communities and natural resource management agencies. The Branch:

  • Implements land and sea management strategies and actions for the ALT estate. For example, the Land Branch currently explores increased State agencies’ involvement in expanding the WA Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) network, in collaboration with the Commonwealth Department of Environment and Water Resources (DEW). On the ground, the Branch has committed to a position of working with the Kimberley Land Council (KLC) and key Kimberley Aboriginal Communities in their expansion and development of this network, which also involves the development of ranger groups.
  • Conducts land audits in preparation for land transfer. These audits contain an assessment of the condition of the land to be transferred. Where necessary, the Land Branch / ALT undertakes remediation including ground works and identification of community needs to ensure that future land management will not be overly onerous.
