Are local government rates payable on Aboriginal reserves and other lands?

Rates are not payable on reserve lands. If a local government service (such as rubbish removal) is provided for a reserve, then the local government could charge for that service. If a reserve or part of it were leased (rented out), then the lessee (the person renting) may have to pay rates depending on what the land is being used for.

Local government rates are payable on any freehold and leasehold land. In some circumstances, an Aboriginal community may seek an exemption from paying rates but not from service charges.
