Derbarl Yerrigan Committee for the Reburial of Yagan’s Kaat

Yagan Memorial Park

Yagan, a leader and warrior of the Wadjuk people, was a hero in the early days of settlement. After being killed by settlers his head was severed and preserved by a smoking process and sent to England.

Yagan has become a powerful symbol of the resistance to Aboriginal people to the loss of their land and culture and in 1997 an Aboriginal delegation visited England returned Yagan’s kaat (head) to Perth.

Information found on this section of the Department of Indigenous Affairs website has been developed at the direction of the Derbarl Yerrigan Committee for the Reburial of Yagan’s Kaat (DYC) to provide the Nyoongar community and the general public with up-to-date information on plans for the reburial of Yagan’s kaat, and associated developments at the Yagan Memorial Park.

The DYC was formed to plan for its effective reburial after the repatriation of Yagan’s kaat to Western Australia. Funding from the Department of Indigenous Affairs, the City of Swan, the Department of Local Government, the Commonwealth Indigenous Heritage Program and Lotterywest has enabled the Yagan Memorial Park to be developed in Upper Swan.
