Call for young indigenous leaders to set sail
- Applications open for leadership development voyage
- Places available for 20 people, sailing the seas over seven days
- The aim is to build participants’ confidence and leadership qualities
Applications are open for young indigenous leaders to embark on a journey of a lifetime.
Launching the Leeuwin Youth Leadership Program today, Indigenous Affairs Minister Peter Collier has called for applications from indigenous West Australians to take part in the development voyage aboard the training tall ship, Leeuwin II.
The purpose of this program, co-ordinated by the Department of Indigenous Affairs, is to ensure participants are supported in their leadership aspirations, by developing their communication and teamwork skills, and recognising the importance of having a strong sense of community,” Mr Collier said.
The successful inaugural program was held earlier this year, when 13 young people were challenged to develop their teamwork and leadership skills.
“The department has now partnered with a corporate supporter, Fugro TSM, to provide additional places for the seven-day voyage, taking the total to 20.
“I encourage any young indigenous person who has been identified as a leader - or potential leader - within their communities, to apply for a position for the next program.”
The Leeuwin Youth Leadership Program voyage is planned for early 2012. Applications are encouraged on behalf of, or from indigenous young people across WA.
