Funding to boost Aboriginal Community Patrol services
More than $2.1million will be provided over the next two years to help expand Aboriginal Community Patrol services across Western Australia.
Indigenous Affairs Minister Peter Collier said the allocation from this year’s State Budget was in addition to $3.8million administered annually by the Department of Indigenous Affairs.
“This funding will ensure that new patroller positions are created, which will allow more Aboriginal Community Patrol services to operate in the locations we require them, at the times that we need them,” he said.
“For example, Nyoongar Patrol will extend its services to the south-east and northern corridors of the Perth metropolitan area, focused primarily along railway line accessible areas. This adds to existing services in Perth, Midland and Fremantle.
“Regionally, the funding will allow operations in Kalgoorlie-Boulder to be back up-and-running within the next month.”
In addition to the increased patroller positions, funding will be used to replace buses for existing patrols and to purchase additional safety equipment.
The Minister said patrols offered support, advice and intervention and operate on the streets primarily at night, working closely with business, residents and visitors to diffuse any potential problems.
“Their presence has a significant impact in ensuring a safe, more family-friendly environment, and means that any issue that might arise can be handled in a culturally appropriate manner,” he said.
Patrols currently operate in Broome, Carnarvon, Derby, Geraldton, Hedland, Kununurra, Laverton, Meekatharra, Mullewa, Perth, Roebourne, Warburton and Wyndham.
