Western Australian Aboriginal Advisory Council members announced

Indigenous Affairs Minister Peter Collier today announced the appointment of five new members of the Western Australian Aboriginal Advisory Council (WAAAC), the statutory body that provides a direct line of communication between the Minister and the State’s indigenous communities.

The new members have been appointed for three-year terms, with four existing members continuing their term through until 2012. Another two members have been re-appointed.

“The WAAAC and its members provide a committed, strong and independent voice on issues of importance to indigenous West Australians, with particular regard to economic, social and cultural advancement,” Mr Collier said.

“Their advice helps in the development of genuine, respectful and reciprocal relationships between indigenous people and the State Government, relationships that are focused on achieving better outcomes.

“The incoming members of the WAAAC are well qualified and are committed to driving change.  I look forward to working with them.”

The new members are Gail Allison, Geoff King, Gordon Gray, Harry Graham and Josey Hansen.

Michael Hayden and Rhonda Murphy have been re-appointed for three-year terms.

“I would also like to express my thanks to the five outgoing members of the WAAAC - Leslie-Ann Conway, Glenda Humes, Bill Stephen, Vanessa Kickett and Wayne Bergmann,” the Minister said.

“Their efforts have helped this Government work towards our objectives, including strengthening the role of the Department of Indigenous Affairs.”

The WAAAC meets every two months, with the new members attending their first meeting in September 2011.
