The Government's response to the Gordon Inquiry,
Putting People First (the Response pdf = 1.2 mb), was tabled in
Parliament in December 2002. The challenge accepted by the Government was
three-fold.

The urgent need to strengthen and improve responses to abuse and violence in
Aboriginal communities.

The need for long term strategies and solutions to address the endemic nature
of abuse and violence in many communities.

Meeting the needs of current and future generations of Aboriginal children
through simultaneous, long-term environmental, social and economic improvements
that will result in sustainable communities.
Outcomes Outlined In The Response

Timely responses to children identified as abused or significantly at risk of
abuse and/or neglect.

A reduction in family violence and child abuse in Aboriginal communities.

An increase in the percentage of people in Aboriginal communities who feel
safe, including children and youth.

An increase in the percentage of Aboriginal people in communities who are aware
of, and can access, family violence and child abuse services.
