  • The Auditor General's Report

Introduction

The Government's response to the Gordon Inquiry, Putting People First (the Response pdf = 1.2 mb), was tabled in Parliament in December 2002. The challenge accepted by the Government was three-fold.

  • The urgent need to strengthen and improve responses to abuse and violence in Aboriginal communities.
  • The need for long term strategies and solutions to address the endemic nature of abuse and violence in many communities.
  • Meeting the needs of current and future generations of Aboriginal children through simultaneous, long-term environmental, social and economic improvements that will result in sustainable communities.

Outcomes Outlined In The Response

  • Timely responses to children identified as abused or significantly at risk of abuse and/or neglect.
  • A reduction in family violence and child abuse in Aboriginal communities.
  • An increase in the percentage of people in Aboriginal communities who feel safe, including children and youth.
  • An increase in the percentage of Aboriginal people in communities who are aware of, and can access, family violence and child abuse services.
