Welcome to Tarwangin, a regular newsletter produced by the Department of Indigenous Affairs to provide the latest news and information on issues affecting the State's Indigenous communities.

DIA functional review: The Department of Indigenous Affairs is undergoing a functional review in accordance with Section 10 of the Public Sector Management Act 1994. The review will consider and report on how the department specifically, and government generally, can best  deliver outcomes for the Indigenous community. In making its recommendations the committee will address issues including: opportunities for, and barriers to, improved policy coordination, planning and monitoring of service delivery for Indigenous communities across the State; the extent of any overlap or duplication with other State Government agencies and the most efficient way of co-ordinating the delivery of services. Public submissions are welcome and should be made by Friday, 19 May 2006. Queries and submissions can be made electronically to review@dpc.wa.gov.au or to Secretariat, Review Committee for the Department of Indigenous Affairs, Level 23, 197 St Georges Terrace, Perth 6000 WA or by calling 9222 8741.

Small business workshop: First Australians Business is offering a free Discovering Enterprise Workshop at the Quality Inn Railway Motel in Kalgoorlie from 10 to 12 May. The workshops, which are held regularly all over Australia, are aimed at helping Indigenous people establish or develop a small business venture. The workshops focus on identifying business opportunities, marketing and promotion, financial management, business planning and cultural barriers to business. They also have practical elements and include visits to local successful small businesses. After the three-day workshop, participants can be linked with a mentor and take part in phase two of the program – Implementing Enterprise. Workshop materials, lunch, morning and afternoon tea will be provided and accommodation and meals can be arranged for those who need it. For more information call Tina Forrest on 9535 9336 or 0423 635 876 or visit www.firstaustralians.org.au.

Caring for Country Campaign: Check out the DIA’s latest campaign “Caring for Country”, which was launched by Indigenous Affairs Minister Sheila McHale last month. The campaign, which gives travellers tips on how to enjoy Indigenous heritage sites without causing them damage, was inspired by adverts made for the Broome DIA office by Goolarri Media. You can view the adverts, radio adverts and Ten Top Tips for Travellers at the DIA website www.dia.wa.gov.au.

Geraldton DIA display: The Geraldton DIA office will have a stand at the Geraldton Streetwork Aboriginal Corporation’s annual Gunnado Farm Market Day on Saturday, 13 May. The event is a great opportunity for the Aboriginal community and government departments to make themselves known in a fun and festive environment.

DIA works in partnerships with government and the community to create social and economic equity for Indigenous people, respect for the land, and value for the State's unique heritage and culture.
