Indigenous Cadetship Program: Four Aboriginal university students are set to join the tourism industry under a new Indigenous Cadetship program announced this week by Tourism and Indigenous Affairs Minister Sheila McHale. The students will be given valuable work experience to prepare them for management roles in theindustry. Cadets will be employed directly by tourism organisations and will undertake a 12-week work placement for each year of their studies. Other organisations have expressed interest in the Indigenous Cadetship Program, and it is expected the numbers will grow in 2007.
Pink Ribbon Day Community Grants: The Cancer Council WA is inviting organisations and community groups to apply for grants of $150 to host a Pink Ribbon Day event on Monday, 23 October 2006. Applications close on Friday, 25 August 2006 and grants can be spent on a variety of items such as catering, venue hire, guest speakers and prizes. More or call 9212 4348.
Senate Inquiry into Stolen Wages: The Australian Senate is conducting an Inquiry into Stolen Wages, which will examine a range of issues relating to the employment of Indigenous workers by State Governments. The Inquiry will look at what State governments did with the money they deducted or retained from Indigenous workers' wages and how they managed Commonwealth benefits like child endowment and pensions payable to Indigenous people. The Inquiry is calling for submissions by 28 July 2006 and is due to report by 7 December 2006.
