Calling for Volunteers: Thank you to all those who volunteered to help with the PALS stall at the Royal Show, however, we still need more people to volunteer. There are two shifts available daily - 8.30am to 12.30pm and 12.30pm to 5.30pm, between 30 September and 7 October. We are offering free entry to the Show for all volunteers, including friends and family members, who are welcome to be part of PALS.

Regional Recruitment Service workshops: Workshops will be held in the regions to promote the new services available to Aboriginal organisations and communities, for staff recruitment, induction, mentoring, industrial relations etc. as part of the Regional Recruitment Service (RRS), which was officially launched in May 2006. The first workshop will be held on 22 August at the Mangrove Hotel in Broome with Port Hedland on 26 September and Kalgoorlie on 24 October (venues to be confirmed).

Overcoming Indigenous Disadvantage: Productivity Commissioner Robert Fitzgerald will conduct consultations with key stakeholders on the national Overcoming Indigenous Disadvantage (OID) framework, prior to the publication of the next national OID Report in 2007. The consultation on 28 August includes a breakfast meeting with the DIA Director General, a presentation by Professor Fiona Stanley followed by a workshop for key Government and Indigenous stakeholder groups. A regional community consultation will also be held in Warburton on 29 August. The OID framework and the OID WA Report can be found on the DIA website.
Stolen Wages Senate Inquiry - extension: The Senate Inquiry into Stolen Wages has extended the closing date for submissions to 29 September 2006. The Inquiry will examine the Government’s management and control of the income and entitlements of Indigenous people during the 20th century. For more information visit the Senate Committee website.
Literacy and Numeracy Family Afternoon: To celebrate the launch of National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW) on Saturday 26 August, families are invited to attend a free fun afternoon at Edith Cowan University. The event will feature face painting, the Maths Factory Activity Bus and other activities designed to encourage reading, writing and arithmetic. The event will be officially opened by NLNW ’Champion’ Robert Issacs OAM JP, and runs from 2pm till 4pm at Kurongkurl Katitjin, Building 15 - Edith Cowan University, Mount Lawley.
Indigenous Researchers Forum: The Indigenous College of Education and Research will be hosting the National Indigenous Researchers Forum on 25 – 27 September, 2006 in Adelaide, South Australia. Areas of focus will include Indigenous Methodologies, Indigenous Voices in Research and Implications for Future Research. Registrations close Friday 8 September. (More)
