Welcome to Tarwangin, a regular newsletter produced by the Department of Indigenous Affairs to provide the latest news and information on issues affecting the State's Indigenous communities.

Rally for the Noongar Nation - Thursday: A rally will be held at Parliament House on Thursday, 28th of September from 12pm to support the High Court's Native Title decision. Speakers include the South West Land and Sea Council's Glen Kelly and Ted Hart, plus men and women of the Noongar Nation.

Fresh Perspectives on Indigenous Issues: Amanda Cattermole, Director General from the DIA will speak at a breakfast seminar on 'Fresh Perspectives on Indigenous Issues' at the Burswood Convention Centre at 7.30am, Friday 29 September. For more information visit the IPPA website.

Clontarf Enrolments now open: The Clontarf Football Academy and Clontarf Aboriginal School are seeking enrolments now. The schools cater for Aboriginal boys in years 10, 11 or 12 who may not be fitting into mainstream schools. An interest in football is beneficial, but not essential as the program is about keeping kids in school. Communities for Children lunch: Communicare currently funds nine child and family wellbeing projects in the Armadale region. They are holding a lunch to get in contact and collaborate with existing children and family services, groups and representatives in the area. Thursday 5 October from 12noon - 1pm at Lotteries House, 122 Forrest Road Armadale (Seminar Room). Australia Council Arts Grants: The Australia Council is calling for applications for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts programs. Grants are available in theree categories: New Work; Presentation and Promotion; and Skills and Arts Development. Colours of Our Country - exhibition: Journey through the Pilbara without leaving Perth by visiting the "Colours of Our Country" - Rio Tinto Iron Ore 40th Anniversary Art Exhibition. The exhibition is open from 8 - 15 October, 10am - 4pm daily at Council House, 27 St Georges Tce, Perth.  Free admission. More

Mt Barker heritage tour: Approximately 30 staff from Mt Barker SHS attended a tour of significant Noongar sites in the Mt Barker region as part of their Professional Learning Program. Led by Joy Ugle, Noongar Elder Caroline Narkle, community member Charlie Colbung and DIA staffer Robert Renolds, the tour included visits to an archaeological site with a wide range of stone artefacts, traditional camping areas, an ochre quarry, and the old reserve house.

Together with stories from Joy, the tour gave a real insight to life on the reserve. Excellent feedback has been received from the high school staff who said it gave them a much a better understanding of Noongar history and an opportunity to value the cultural heritage of their district.

Wiluna Development Project: Plans for a range of new facilities and services are going ahead in Wiluna, in response to community consultation held last year. A community workshop was held in Wiluna last week which provided a progress report on the Wiluna Development Project which includes a new school expected to open in October 2007, nine new houses, new sewerage treatment facilities, and street lighting and footpaths. Reflections Art Studio calling for artists: Reflections Art Studio is looking for a number of art instructors/ therapists including an Indigenous Art instructor in both full and part time positions. Reflections Art Studio provides art facilities and instruction in a supportive community environment for adults living with and recovering from persistent mental illness.
