Patrol agreement signed last week: An agreement that establishes guidelines for Patrols in the Mid-West Gascoyne Region has been signed between the Western Australian Police, DIA and the Geraldton, Yulella, Carnarvon and Mullewa Community Patrols. The agreement aims to create a safer community environment and a support network for the community; reduce anti-social behaviour, contact with the criminal justice system and the incarceration rate of Aboriginal people; and improve relations and/or collaboration between DIA, Aboriginal Community Patrols, the WA Police and Aboriginal people. Keeping language alive: Aboriginal language teachers are to be appointed to another seven WA schools after eight new Aboriginal language teachers graduated last week. The teachers as qualified Language Other Than English (LOTE) and are among 85 Aboriginal teachers teaching Indigenous languages throughout Western Australia.
Free Community Legal Workshops: The Aboriginal and Torres Straight Legal Service is running seven workshops about the law and legal issues facing Indigenous people. The first workshop will be on Wednesday, 8 November and will cover the history of the ALSWA, the State's Move On Laws and what to do if you're arrested. Other topics include prison visits, how to make a Police complaint, domestic violence and how to become a lawyer. Workshops are held at 10am - 11.30am at ALSWA head office - 7 Aberdeen Street, Perth. Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse: The Advocates for Survivors of Child Abuse invite the public and government sector employees to attend a forum on 'Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse - Why WA Needs to Protect Our Children in Law' from 10am - 4pm, Friday, 3 November at the Perth Town Hall. ASCA says that WA needs mandatory reporting of child abuse and will state its case at the forum with speakers including Emeritus Professor Freda Briggs, Dr. Sue Gordon, Carol Martin, Robyn McSweeney Michelle Stubbs, and host Paul Murray. Changing the Face of Poverty: The annual Grace Vaughn Memorial Lecture will be held at 6.15pm on 27 November at the UWA's University Club Theatre Auditorium featuring Imelda Dodds, who will explain why poverty is neither inevitable nor insurmountable. Through stories derived from her experience working with the International Federation of Social Workers, Imelda will share ways in which individuals and groups have worked to alleviate poverty. In particular she will focus on the impact of poverty on women and children and address the politics of poverty and the role of governments in finding or inhibiting long-term solutions.
CLiCK - Computer Recycling: Don't let your old computer go to landfill - donate them to CLiCK (Communities Linking Computer Knowledge). It's a community project which helps people who can not afford computers and non-profit organisations obtain computers free of charge by rebuilding old computers. All computers and components donated to CLiCK are reused or recycled, including faulty components which are recycled for scrap metal and plastic products.
