Adult Learners' Week to showcase Aboriginal culture: Indigenous men and women across Western Australia are being urged to get involved in Adult Learners' Week 2007, 1-8 September. Adult Learners' Week coordinator Fiona Preston said the week will showcase the essential role of Adult Community Education in developing and sustaining harmonious communities. "The range of Adult Community Education programs centred on Aboriginal learning plays a leading role in developing and promoting the arts and skills traditional to Indigenous Western Australians," Ms Preston said. Memorial Service - George Burarrawanga: A memorial service will be held on Friday, 22 June 2007 for the legendary George Burarrawanga, lead singer of the Warumpi Band, who died on Sunday, 10 June 2007 at Galiwinku (Elcho Island) surrounded by loving Gumatj and associated families. The memorial service is being held at Galiwinku and there is an open invitation to the public and media to attend. The family wishes that George Burarrawanga's music not be played or his image displayed according to Gumatj traditions. His family have also requested he be referred to as George Burarrawanga. Community prepares for NAIDOC Week: The City of Swan and local Indigenous community members are working together to create a week of celebrations for NAIDOC week between Friday, July 6 and Saturday, July 14. NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration) Week celebrates heritage, culture and future of Indigenous people across Australia and the theme for 2007 is "Looking forward, looking blak". Equal Opportunity Act 1984 Review: Sweeping changes to the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 have been recommended following a comprehensive review of the Act, the first since its enactment in 1985. The review attracted nearly 600 individual and 90 organisational submissions, with the 76-page report referred to in State Parliament by Attorney General Jim McGinty on Thursday May 24, 2007. The review recommends introducing a number of new grounds of unlawful discrimination, including breastfeeding, bullying and irrelevant criminal or medical record. National Treasures from Australia's Great Libraries Exhibition: The State Library and Western Australia Museum are holding a free exhibition commencing Saturday, 30 June to Sunday, 26 August. The exhibition is a once in a lifetime chance to see some of the countries and Western Australia's valued treasures, including Billingee drawings and a patchwork quilt made by Indigenous children of the Swan River settlement c. 1845. The exhibition will be open daily from 9.30am to 5pm. Kulbardi Indigenous Film Festival: Kulbardi Indigenous Film Festival, Koora Yeye Boorda (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) is taking place on Sunday, 8 July, at the Kim Beazley Theatre, Murdoch University.The film festival is part of this years NAIDOC celebrations and will include the Western Australian premiere of the feature length documentary Footprints in the Sand, and five award winning short Indigenous films. Burning Daylight screening on ABC: A Western Australian documentary, Burning Daylight will be broadcast on ABC Message Stick program on Monday, 25 June at 6pm, and repeated on the following Sunday at 1:30pm. This documentary incorporates dance and film in a performance set outside a notorious pub on a Broome-style karaoke night.
Footprints in the Sand screening on SBS: The Western Australian documentary, Footprints in the Sand will be broadcast on SBS Television on Wednesday, 4 July at 8pm. This documentary follows wiry bushman Geoffrey 'Yullala' Stewart and some of his countrymen to his birthplace in the remote Gibson Desert, where they celebrate the lives of Yullala's parents, Warri and Yatungka, the 'last of the nomads'.
ECU Indigenous Film Festival: Kurongkurl Katitjin School of Indigenous Australian Studies are holding their 8th annual NAIDOC film festival on 10 July from 6.30pm - 9.45pm at Edith Cowan University, Mount Lawley campus. The evening will include a combination of Indigenous food, entertainment and company. There is maximum seating capacity for 280 people, so arriving early is highly recommended.
