Aboriginal Heritage Sites Register

Requests for Digital Information

DIA has changed its method of enabling clients to obtain digital data from the Register. Provision of digital data from the Aboriginal Sites Register was subject to a relatively lengthy administrative process that usually took about 5 days. The new process follows the same principles as before within an on-line environment.

Please Note: In order to use the data downloaded you must have a mapping or GIS system, for example, Map Info, Microstation, ArcView or ArcGIS. If you do not have a mapping system such as these the same information can be viewed through the following web atlases:

New Online Process

The aim of the new process is to make it easier for clients to obtain up-to-date data. To facilitate easier data access clients will now need to:

  1. read the Licencing Information related to the Aboriginal Sites Register, and the Digital Data Licence.
  2. agree with the terms and conditions of the licence.
  3. enter their address and email details in an on-line form.
  4. select, from a list, appropriate datasets. (Metadata will be available for each dataset.)
  5. copy their selected datasets within a standard download procedure.

DIA will send regular emails reminding clients that they should update their data. By making the download process easier, the new process encourages clients to update more regularly their copy of the sites data. The intended outcome of this process is that by using more up-to-date data clients will be able to make more informed decisions.

Please contact the Heritage GIS Registration Officer on (08) 9235 8114 or via email for further information regarding digital data.

The data supplied under the DIA Digital Licence Agreement will contain information about the following:
L = Lodged: Places Lodged with the Registrar, placed on the Register, not assessed under section 5 of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (AHA). IR = Insufficient Information (as assessed by Site Assessment Group) Site Assessment Group (SAG)
Sites lodged with the Department are assessed under the direction of the Registrar of Aboriginal Sites. These are not to be considered the final assessment.
Final assessment will be determined by the Aboriginal Cultural Material Committee (ACMC).
I = Insufficient Information: Places Lodged with Registrar, placed on Register, assessed as having insufficient information to complete an assessment within the terms of Section 5 of the AHA. PR = Permanent register (as assessed by Site Assessment Group)
P = Permanent: Places Lodged with Registrar, placed on Register, lodged information is assessed as meeting the terms of Section 5 of the AHA. SR = Stored Data (as assessed by Site Assessment Group)
S = Stored Data: Places Lodged with Registrar, placed on Register, lodged information is assessed as not meeting the terms of Section 5 of the AHA.

Attribute data is included for each site denoting their status as "Lodged", "Insufficient Information", "Permanent", "Stored", "Insufficient Information (SAG)", "Permanent register (SAG)", or "Stored data (SAG)"
